Welcome to my home page, my name is Jason Secci and I am a personal finance coach. I help people to get their finances sorted out so that they can achieve their financial goals. Over the years that I have been doing this it has never ceased to amaze me how little the average person actually knows about their finances and how much help they need in order to get them all sorted out. This is something that I hope this site can help with.
I have been working in the world of personal finance for nearly twenty years. I got my start after graduating from college when I got a job working at a bank as a personal banker. In order to move up in my career I ultimately went on to pursue my Certified Financial Planner certification. This gave me chance to move on and take a job helping people to do their financial planning. At least that is what I thought I would be doing when I took the job.
One of the things I quickly discovered when I got my first job as a financial planner is that it was less about helping people plan for their financial future than it was about selling financial products. Mostly these were mutual funds. It wasn't necessarily that the mutual funds were bad, in reality they were about as good as any other. The problem was that I really couldn't give them the best information to help them with their financial planning since I was under constant pressure to sell product. In fact I was actually paid by how much product I sold, hardly a recipe for objective advice.
It didn't take me long to realize that the job that I had wasn't for me. Instead I decided to go out on my own and to offer real and honest financial advice. I no longer sell anything except for my advice. This allows me to help people to come up with a realistic financial plan that will help them to achieve their goals. Something that is unlikely to happen when you talk to the guys who are offering free advice on personal finance. If the advice is free you can be sure that it is a way to find people to sell mutual funds to.
Over the years that have been working as a personal finance coach it has shocked me how many people have been completely clueless about their finances. Particularly when it comes to their retirement planning. Most people grossly underestimate how much money they are going to need and as a result are not saving nearly enough. Even worse many of these people also have serious problems with debt which is the second most common problem that I see. Getting this all sorted out is critical if you are going to get your finances sorted out.
